How much does it cost to run social media with AI? Real numbers from a 150-post month
By Feedhand editorial teamPublished 8 min readCosts
People asking what it costs to run social media with AI usually get one of two answers: "almost nothing" (the price of a chatbot) or a SaaS price list. Both are incomplete. This page breaks the cost into four layers, shows what we actually measured on a real brand, and puts the subscription price next to the work it replaces. For the short version, see AI cost per social media post; for the bigger picture of what these tools do, read the guide to AI social media managers.
What does AI actually cost per social media post?
The language-model cost of planning and writing one post was about 2.7–2.8 cents in our test, but that is only the first of four layers. A full month of posts has four separate costs, and they differ by two orders of magnitude.
| Cost layer | What it pays for | What we measured or can cite |
|---|---|---|
| Language model usage | Research, monthly plan, captions, hooks, hashtags, checks | $4.11–4.24 for 150 posts (our test) |
| Image and video generation | Product scenes, carousel visuals, Reels and TikTok clips | Public list prices per image or per second (below) |
| Your review time | Reading, editing, approving, posting | Depends on you; not in our numbers |
| Tool subscription | The software that runs the whole pipeline | Plan price divided by quota (below) |
Most "AI is basically free" claims rest on the first row alone. It is real, and it is small.
Why is the language model the cheapest layer?
Text generation is cheap because providers bill it per million tokens, and a month of social posts is a small amount of text. On Anthropic's pricing page (checked 27 Oct 2026), Opus 5.5 lists at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, Sonnet 5.5 at $2 and $10, and Haiku 5.5 from $0.10 and $0.50. OpenAI's API pricing (checked 27 Oct 2026) spans a similar range, from $0.05 per million input tokens for gpt-5-nano up to $30 for gpt-5.5-pro.
Most of the tokens go not into captions but into the work around them: reading the brand's site, researching competitors in each market, building the plan and checking each post. In our test that whole chain, for 75 posts in Türkiye and 75 in the USA, stayed under $4.25.
How much do AI images and videos cost?
Image and video generation cost far more than text, and they are priced per image or per second rather than per token. On Google's Gemini API pricing page (checked 27 Oct 2026), image models list at roughly $0.03 to $0.24 per image depending on model and resolution, and Gemini Omni Flash video at about $0.10 per second of 720p.
A worked example at those list prices: one 20-second vertical clip at $0.10 per second is $2.00 of raw generation, before any retakes, voiceover or editing. That single clip costs about 70 times the model usage of writing one post in our test. Time works the same way: in our test a 15–30 second 9:16 video took 3.4–5 minutes to generate, against roughly 10 seconds of planning time per post. More detail is in how long an AI Reel takes to make.
What does an AI social media subscription cost per post?
A managed AI social media tool costs roughly $1.65 to $3.33 per item at list price, depending on the plan. The table below takes Feedhand's monthly list prices and divides them by each plan's monthly quota of posts plus stories. It is plain arithmetic (list price divided by quota), not a measured cost, and it assumes you use the whole quota.
| Plan | Price per month | Monthly quota | List price divided by quota |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photo | $99 | 30 posts + 30 stories, no video | $1.65 per item |
| Starter | $179 | 30 posts + 30 stories, 10 videos | $2.98 per item |
| Growth | $499 | 90 posts + 60 stories, 30 videos | $3.33 per item |
| Pro | $799 | 150 posts + 90 stories, 50 videos | $3.33 per item |
Yearly billing is 20% off, which brings Growth to $399.20 a month, or $2.66 per item. The per-item figure rises from Photo to Starter because Starter adds video, the expensive layer from the previous section. Full plan details are in the Feedhand pricing table.
What the subscription buys is the pipeline, not the text: brand analysis, market research, the monthly plan for Instagram, TikTok, X and Reddit, images and videos made from your own product photos, and safety checks and AI labels on every package.
Is doing it yourself with ChatGPT or Claude cheaper?
In cash, yes: a consumer chatbot plan is cheaper than any managed tool, and Claude Pro lists at $20 a month billed monthly on Claude's pricing page (checked 27 Oct 2026). In total cost, it depends on what your hours are worth and whether you need images and video.
| DIY with a chatbot | Managed AI social media manager | |
|---|---|---|
| Cash per month | About $20 for a chat plan, plus any image or video tools | Plan price ($99–799 for Feedhand) |
| Brand context | You paste it in each session or set it up yourself | Read once from your site and kept |
| Monthly plan | You prompt for it and fix the structure | Built per platform and per market |
| Images and video | Separate tools and credits | Included up to the quota |
| Quality checks | You read every post | Automated checks, then you approve |
| What you still do | Everything around the text | Review, approve, post |
The honest trade-off: DIY suits someone who enjoys prompting, posts mostly text or their own photos, and has a few hours a week. A managed tool suits someone whose time costs more than the price gap, or who needs video. Even with a managed tool, you still do some work. With Feedhand you approve each post on your phone and share it in one tap from a ready package, because auto-posting is not live yet, and Reddit is always a manual copy-and-submit step. What hidden quality costs come with AI-written posts?
The biggest hidden cost is the time you spend catching bad output, and it does not show up on any invoice. Our own example: in an early run, 37 of 150 posts contained self-disclaimer phrases in the "as an AI..." style, the kind of line no brand wants to publish. After a prompt fix, the same 150-post test produced 0 of 150.
That is about one post in four that someone would have had to find and rewrite by hand. The model usage was still a few dollars; the real cost was the editing time. When you compare tools, ask not "how cheap is the text" but "how many posts can I approve without rewriting them". Watch for two more: generic posts from a tool that never learned your voice, and videos generated, rejected and still paid for.
How much time does AI save on monthly planning?
Planning a month is the clearest time saving we measured: 150 posts for two markets took 23.5–27 minutes end to end, including research, the plan and the writing. Brand analysis before that took 93–113 seconds. Your review is extra and depends on how closely you read. The breakdown is in how long AI takes to plan a month of posts.
How we measured this
We ran Feedhand on a real brand, viralance.com, on 27 Oct 2026, targeting two markets: Türkiye and the USA. We ran the full monthly plan twice, which is why every figure is a range: 150 posts per run (75 per market), 23.5–27 minutes end to end, and $4.11–4.24 in model usage.
What counts in the dollar figure: language-model usage for planning and writing, as billed by the model provider. What does not count: image and video generation, storage, the subscription price, and any human time. The video timing (3.4–5 minutes for a 15–30 second 9:16 clip) and the self-disclaimer count (37 of 150 before a prompt fix, 0 of 150 after) come from the same day of testing.
Limits: one brand, one day, two runs. More markets or a larger catalog would cost more; one market would likely cost less, but we did not measure that. Treat this as one honest data point, not an industry average. Our wider rules are on the editorial policy page.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to write social media posts with AI?
In our 27 Oct 2026 test, planning and writing 150 posts cost $4.11–4.24 in language-model usage, about 2.7–2.8 cents per post. That excludes images, video, your time and any subscription. The writing itself is rarely the expensive part.
Why do AI social media tools cost $100 or more a month if the text costs cents?
Because the text is the smallest layer. Image and video generation cost far more per item, and a tool also pays for research, checks, storage and the software itself. Dividing Feedhand's list prices by quota gives $1.65 to $3.33 per post or story.
Is ChatGPT enough to run a brand's social media?
It can write good captions if you give it context, and a chat plan costs around $20 a month. You still have to build the plan, make or source the visuals, check every post and publish it yourself. Whether that is cheaper depends on how many hours it takes you each week.
Do AI tools post automatically?
Some do; Feedhand does not yet. Today Feedhand prepares each post, you approve it on your phone, and you share it from a ready, full-resolution package in one tap. Auto-posting is coming soon, and Reddit stays a manual package.
