Instagram carousel vs Reels vs Stories: which format for which goal (2026)
By Feedhand editorial teamPublished 8 min readPlatforms
Choosing between a carousel, a Reel and a Story is really choosing a goal. This page maps each goal to a format, separates what Instagram officially says from what practitioner studies measured, lists the official sizes, explains the 5-hashtag limit, and ends with a sample weekly mix you can copy. If you are still deciding how much to post in total, start with how often a business should post on Instagram, TikTok and X.
Which Instagram format fits which goal?
Reels fit reach, carousels fit saves and considered engagement, single images fit quick announcements, and Stories fit relationships and conversion with people who already follow you. The table pairs each goal with the format and the signal Instagram says it predicts on that surface.
| Goal | Best format | Signal to watch | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reach new people | Reels | Watch time, sends per reach | Reels are shown mostly to non-followers |
| Get saved | Carousel | Saves per reach | Carousels had the highest average saves in Socialinsider's data |
| Get shared in DMs | Reels or carousel with useful info | Sends per reach | Sends matter slightly more for people who do not follow you |
| Keep followers engaged | Stories | Replies, completion | Stories rank by closeness and are shown to followers |
| Turn followers into buyers | Stories plus a single image or carousel | Replies, link taps | Followers already know you; give them the next step |
The evidence behind each row is a mix of official statements and practitioner studies, labeled in the sections below.
What does Instagram officially say about each format?
Instagram officially says there is no single algorithm: Feed, Stories, Explore and Reels each run their own ranking system. In Adam Mosseri's post Instagram Ranking Explained, Reels are ranked on how likely you are to reshare, watch to the end, like, or visit the audio page, while Stories are ranked on viewing history, engagement history and closeness to the author, predicting whether you will open, reply or skip.
In January 2025 Mosseri named the three signals that matter most. As Social Media Today reported, "the top three signals that matter most for ranking are watch time, likes and sends", with likes slightly more important for people who follow you and sends slightly more important for people who do not.
Official rules for each format:
- Reels: to be recommended, a Reel must be 3 minutes or shorter, and Instagram advises catching attention in the first 3 seconds and filming full-screen vertical, according to the @creators recommendations guide. Reels that are low-resolution, watermarked, muted, bordered, mostly text or already posted on Instagram may be shown less.
- Carousels: Mosseri said in October 2024 that when someone does not swipe, "we'll often give that carousel a second chance and automatically move to that second piece of media", per Social Media Today. Design slide 2 as a second hook.
- Original content: accounts that post content they did not create or meaningfully improve 10 or more times in 30 days are not shown in recommendations, per Instagram's originality page. When two copies exist, only the original is recommended.
Which format actually gets more reach, Reels or carousels?
Reels get more reach in the largest study, but carousels get more engagement, and one major dataset disagrees on views. Buffer's analysis of more than 4 million posts (January 2022 to October 2024) found Reels reach 36% more people than carousels and 125% more than single images, while carousels get 12% more engagement than Reels and 114% more than images.
Socialinsider's Instagram benchmarks put engagement rate at 0.55% for carousels, 0.52% for Reels and 0.37% for images in 2025, and 0.50%, 0.48% and 0.35% in Q3 2026. Average saves per post at 50–100K followers were 35 for carousels, 22 for Reels and 10 for images. Our rulebook also records Socialinsider finding higher average views per post for carousels than Reels in some follower bands, which conflicts with Buffer's reach result.
The two studies use different samples and different metrics (views versus reach), so we label this as conflicting. The working rule: Reels for new audiences, carousels for content worth keeping, and let your own reach per post settle it after a month.
What are Instagram Stories good for?
Stories are for people who already follow you: replies, quick updates, behind the scenes and the last step before a purchase. Instagram ranks them on closeness to the author and predicts replies, so a Story that gets answered strengthens the relationship. Buffer notes that Stories are not typically shown to non-followers, which is why they rarely grow an account.
Dash Social's benchmark of 2,000+ brands found brands post about 2 Stories a day, with 70% average completion and 5% exits. Use Stories to reshare each new Reel or carousel, ask one question a day with a sticker, and point followers to a product page when you have something to sell. Stories and Highlights are not indexed by Google, so do not put anything there that you want found in search.
What sizes should Instagram posts be in 2026?
Use 1080 pixels wide for everything, 4:5 portrait (1080 x 1350) for feed images and carousels, and 9:16 vertical for Reels. Instagram's help page on photo resolution says photos keep their resolution between 320 and 1080 pixels wide when the aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 4:5; other ratios are cropped.
| Format | Size | Ratio | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feed image or carousel slide | 1080 x 1350 | 4:5 | Tallest ratio the help page lists |
| Square image | 1080 x 1080 | 1:1 | Still supported |
| Landscape image | 1080 x 566 | 1.91:1 | Widest supported ratio |
| Reels | 1080 x 1920 | 9:16 | Full-screen vertical, under 3 minutes to be recommended |
| Profile grid thumbnail | shown at 3:4 | 3:4 | Grid switched from squares in January 2025 |
| Carousel length | up to 20 items | — | Raised from 10 in August 2024 |
Two points come from secondary reports of Instagram announcements rather than a help page: the 3:4 vertical grid and the 20-item carousel limit. Keep the headline of a 4:5 cover slide inside the middle 3:4 area so the grid does not crop it.
How many hashtags should you use on Instagram?
Use up to 5 specific hashtags, and skip generic ones such as #reels or #explore. In December 2025 Instagram started limiting posts and Reels to 5 hashtags, saying that "using fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags, rather than many generic ones" works better, as Social Media Today reported.
Mosseri has also said hashtags help Instagram understand what a post is about but do not meaningfully change how much reach it gets. Practitioner data conflicts: Metricool's 2026 study found posts with at least one hashtag got fewer views than average, which is a correlation, not proof hashtags hurt. Write a clear caption first; treat hashtags as labels.
What is a good weekly mix of Instagram formats?
A good starting mix for a small business is 4 feed posts a week, 2 Reels, 1 carousel and 1 flexible slot, plus a short Stories sequence every day. That sits inside the 3–5 posts a week that Buffer found to be the sweet spot.
- Monday, Reel: a short answer to the question customers ask most, hook in the first 3 seconds.
- Tuesday, Stories: reshare the Reel, add a poll or question sticker.
- Wednesday, carousel: a guide or comparison worth saving, 8–10 slides as our default, slide 2 as a second hook.
- Thursday, Stories: behind the scenes, one reply prompt.
- Friday, Reel: product in use or a customer moment you filmed yourself.
- Weekend, flexible slot: a single image for news or an offer, or a photo carousel with music so it can appear in the Reels tab.
- Every day: 3–7 Story frames with a strong first frame, since the first frame loses the most viewers.
After four weeks, compare reach per post and saves or sends per reach by format, and shift one slot toward whichever format earned it. Need opening lines for those Reels? The free hook writer gives you 10 for any topic.
Feedhand builds this kind of mix from your own product photos: Reels, carousels, Stories and single images, each with the reason for the post and the rules it follows. You approve and share from a ready package; it does not post automatically yet. For what that costs against a freelancer or agency, see the social media manager vs agency vs AI comparison.
Start your next carousel from your best photos
The weakest part of most carousels is the photo choice, not the caption. Drop 10–300 photos into the free photo picker: it sets aside blurry, dark and repeated shots and suggests the strongest ones in carousel order, all in your browser, so your photos never leave your device.
Frequently asked questions
Are Reels better than carousels on Instagram?
Reels are better for reaching new people and carousels are better for saves and engagement. Buffer's 4M-post study found 36% more reach for Reels and 12% more engagement for carousels. Use both, chosen by the goal of each post.
How long should an Instagram Reel be in 2026?
Keep it at 3 minutes or less, because Instagram does not recommend longer Reels to non-followers. Within that limit, length should follow the content; the hook in the first 3 seconds matters more than the total.
Do Stories help you get new followers?
Rarely, because Stories are mostly shown to people who already follow you. They build replies and loyalty. Use Reels and carousels for discovery and Stories for the relationship.
Can I post the same video on TikTok and Instagram?
You can reuse the idea, but upload a clean file without another app's watermark. Instagram says watermarked Reels may be shown less and that only the original is recommended when duplicates exist.
What size should an Instagram carousel be?
Use 1080 x 1350 pixels (4:5) for every slide, with up to 20 slides. Keep the cover headline inside the 3:4 area so the profile grid does not crop it.
